Brief Description:
Full-time Dental Assistant position based in West Heidelberg. This is a fixed-term role until 31 December 2026 to cover maternity leave.

YOUR NEW ROLE:

The Dental Assistant is responsible for providing direct clinical support to Dental Officers by delivering high-quality chairside assistance and ensuring adherence to best practice infection control protocols. This includes active participation in sterilisation and instrument reprocessing activities as directed.

This role is integral to the effective functioning of the Dental Service, with key responsibilities spanning clinical assistance, infection control, and support of day-to-day operations. The incumbent is expected to maintain a high level of knowledge and competence as outlined in the "Responsibilities" section.

The duties and focus of this position have been shaped by the organisation's Strategic Plan, existing contractual obligations, priorities identified through local health needs assessments, and consultation with the Dental Team.


YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:

Receive and prepare clients for dental treatment, ensuring comfort and efficiency while providing high-quality chairside assistance to Dental Officers.

Reprocess reusable instruments in compliance with AS-5369:2023 standards for reprocessing of reusable medical devices in health and non-health-related facilities.

Safe use and maintenance of dental equipment according to manufacturer's guidelines, advise Team Leader/ Oral Health Manager on the condition of dental equipment.

Compliance with the National Safety & Quality Primary and Community Healthcare Standards, Infection Control Australian Standards and Serilisation Standards

Assist with administrative tasks as required, contributing to the smooth and efficient operation of the dental clinic.

Participate in all mandatory training sessions to maintain and enhance professional skills and knowledge.

Provide guidance and assistance to all dental staff, including casual employees, less experienced staff, and students under supervision.

Actively participate in Oral Health team meetings, contributing to quality improvement initiatives.

Support and engage in health promotion projects and initiatives as directed.

Carry out any reasonable additional duties as directed by Holstep Health.

Assist in the delivery of oral health services as part of Outreach Services including the Smile Squad Program.


WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED:

Certificate III in Dental Assisting or equivalent

Relevant Dental Nursing experience and skills
Experience in working with people from culturally diverse backgrounds

Demonstrated ability to perform to the highest standards
Knowledge of infection control in dental clinic settings is essential

Ability to learn and operate new dental equipment e.g. electronic tracking systems, sterilisers, instrument washers, digital photography, and also, ability to learn to perform additional tests related to the usage of new equipment in the sterilisation room

Demonstrated ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team, reliability & punctuality
Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills
Highly developed time management and organisational skills

Commitment to the principles of public dental health
Computer literacy skills
Demonstrated ability to lead community based dental teams
